How do I know for sure if my hemorrhoid is thrombosed or not?
I've had a hemorrhoid (bout the size of a grape) for 2 solid weeks now. The health dept told me it could be a blood clot & may need to be lanced & the blood drained, but they couldn't do that there. So I've been looking for doctors, etc… willing & able to help me. I have no insurance. I've been reading up on Thrombosed Hemorrhoids. I thought that's what I have. But it's says they are excruciatingly painful. I wouldn't say mine is excruciating. It's sore & aggravating & I can feel it there, but I'm not dying of pain. There's no blood. It just won't shrink or go down. I've tried several at home methods. I'd like to have a better idea of how serious this is. I've been told surgery is very expensive & as I said, I don't have insurance. Any info would help. Thank you

DOn't have surgery unless you absolutlely have too…In this case I would go see a doctor and they will give you perscription…over the counter is not enough TRUST ME I KNOW!!!! I am sorry fr your pain I know how it feels but sometimes we have to pay a lot to take care of ourselves and really there is nothing better to spend your money on than taking care of your body.

What are thrombosed hemorrhoids?
All people have blood-filled sacs that cushion the passage of stool through the anal canal. When these sacs become stretched and enlarged, they are called hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids can occur during or after pregnancy, after long periods in a seated position (such as during long car trips), or because of constipation or diarrhea. Hemorrhoids generally are classified as external (outside of the anal canal), which can be very painful, and internal (inside the anal canal), which can protrude and bleed.
External hemorrhoids can become thrombosed (develop blood clots inside) and become very tender. Large blood clots can produce pain with walking, sitting or passage of stool. It is not clear why healthy people suddenly develop clots in external hemorrhoids.
What treatments are available for thrombosed external hemorrhoids?
The treatments for external hemorrhoids are different from those for internal hemorrhoids. One treatment option is to allow clots in the external hemorrhoids to be slowly absorbed by the body over several weeks. You can try hot baths, ointments or creams for the discomfort. Most experts recommend that the blood clots be surgically removed.
What happens during surgical removal of the thrombosed hemorrhoid?
One procedure creates an incision (cut) over the clot, allowing the doctor to squeeze out the clot. Unfortunately, this quick and easy procedure frequently results in blood clots reforming and continuing pain. A more extensive procedure (full hemorrhoidectomy) removes the clot and the blood vessels in the hemorrhoid. This procedure is longer and may require sutures (stitches) to close the wound, but can yield better results. Local anesthesia (numbing medicine) is used for both procedures.

Thrombosed hemorrhoids are very painful, so, if you don't feel pain you might just have external hemorrhoids. I successfully treated my hemorrhoids with Rue Care Oil. You can get it online.

The surgeons we refer patients from our office for a thrombosed hemorrhoid will only do an incision and drainage if it is 24 hours old or less. If it is any older than that the traditional therapy applies to healing like the other people have mentioned. What you also have to consider is the fact that if you get to a surgeon in time the next time around, you are going to have an incision that is open and healing in your anal area that is difficult to keep clean and might become infected. I have also helped during these procedures and they seem to be a lot more painful to the patient than just waiting it out at home. A needle in and around a thrombosed hemorrhoid to numb the area is very, very painful (men almost pass out). I always got the impression they regretted their decision to show up after it got underway!

Yes it's painful. If it's swollen and painful, you should get it lanced. Any surgical or ambulatory or urgent car facility should be able to take care of it.
it's a simple procedure, and not expensive, but you can also treat it with:
hot baths (you can get a 'sitz' bath thing that sits on the toilet – just fill it with very warm water and epsom salts).
Suppositories that have cortesone (sp?) also help alleviate the pain. Exercise (walking) helps. Do not sit for extended periods and if you do, a 'donut' cushion is the best thing to use.
